The Drain Pump is an OEM component for GE dishwasher models. Located at the bottom of the dishwasher tub, this pump works to remove dirty water from the wash cycle and drain it out of the appliance. It is a vital component responsible for fully clearing all water from the dishwasher.

Causes of a bad drain pump can include a clogged or restricted impeller which prevents proper water drainage. Sediment buildup over time can reduce the pump's efficiency. The motor or internal mechanics may also fail due to extensive use.

Symptoms of a bad drain pump include:

  • Incomplete draining of water at the end of cycles
  • Puddles or standing water left in the bottom of the tub
  • Smelly dishwasher from stagnant water issues
  • Error codes related to draining problems

This OEM GE part is also compatible with some Kenmore dishwashers.

Larry for Model Number PDW7300

Have a PDW7300 dishwasher. During the rinse and wash cycles the water is slowly being pushed out of the dishwasher into the sink. Water level gets so low that the main pump is no longer able to provide the volume of water to the spray arms for it to continue washing. When the drain phase hits it empties the remaining water out. Seems like the water is being forced past the drain pump during normal main pump operations. Does that mean the drain pump is allowing the water past the impeller? Do I need to replace the whole drain pump? Is there to much back pressure from main pump that is it forcing water past the drain pump.

1 Answer

Larry, You will want to check the drain pump to make sure that there is no voltage getting to the pump when the unit is in the wash mode. If there is no voltage then it just sounds like a drain pump issue, if there is voltage going to it then the issue will be with the control board.

Tim, The drain pump can be access from the bottom of the dishwasher by pulling the unit out and tilting it back for easier access. You will want to check the circulation impeller to make sure that there is no damage to it.

Scot for Model Number PDW7880

I have a GE Profile Model # PDW7880 that's 9 years old. My wife mentioned that she recently noticed standing water at the completion of the cycle when she opened the D/W to unload. The water comes all the way up to the heating element so I used a wet/dry vac to get the standing water out. I have done a lot of troubleshooting and have cleaned the sump are getting pistachio shells out and other paper debris. I have also ensured there is no blockage in the disposal hose, and have pushed the reset button to try and force the drain pump to engage to drain the water from the unit. The water will not drain. Do I need to replace the drain pump or do you have other recommendations/troubleshooting ideas? Water seems to load OK into the unit so I haven't checked the supply lines coming into the unit... Any ideas are appreciated.

Scot, You will want to check the impeller assembly on the pump to make sure that it is not damaged or have clogs. If this checks ok then the drain pump WD26X10016 would most likely be the cause for the failure.

Jeff for Model Number ZBD6800K00BB

Last week my Monogram Dishwasher ZBD6800K00BB started leaking (more like flooding) water out of the bottom of the door. When I looked inside the bottom was filled with water that apparently risen above the bottom seal of the door. I ordered a replacement pump from you and replaced it. I also checked and cleaned out all the lines and drains making sure they were all clear. Even after replacing the pump there is still water left in the bottom of the DW that will not drain even when I disconnect the drain hose from the under sink drain and let the hose dangle down into a bucket below the DW the water will not drain. If I disconnect the drain from the internal loop and connect the drain directly to the pump motor drain it will drain by gravity into a bucket but when connected to the internal drain loop it does not drain. I have checked the one-way flaps on all the drain hoses and outlets and they appear to be intact and working. Any ideas what I can try next?

1 Answer

Hello Jeff, First you should check the flood switch WD12X10151 and float WD12X10047. This should prevent any more water from entering the unit when it is close to the overflow level. You should also check the water valve WD15X10014. With the unit empty, start the unit and have someone flip the breaker to the unit off. The water should stop filling the unit immediately. If it doesn't, the water valve should be replaced. If the drain pump is not pushing the water out, but the water will come out by gravity, the impeller in the pump has an issue and the pump WD26X10016 should be replaced.

George, If the drain hose does not go to a point of at least 32" high loop or is not connected to an air gap then this would be the cause of water still being left in the dishwasher.
