Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Range Electronic Control Board (Part Number: OEM17873670)

Hello Eric, The element itself would have to be replaced as it is the limiter that has failed causing the element to continuously cycle. To replace you would open oven door and take out 1 screw on either side, Lift up on top and slide forward. Disconnect harness connector at the back and turn cooktop over. When replacing element pay attention to which numbers the clips are attached to so that when you put it back on they will be in the same position.

Hello John. When you tested the voltage did you go from wire to ground on each side? Also, if you tested between both wires you should be getting 240v. If everything else works fine as you stated then it could be a bad relay in the control board W10769079.

While baking (may have happened when the top oven door was opened, not sure), all lights on control panel shut off. Stove top works, and warm indicator light works. Unplugged the oven for a time and back in. Still no lights. Tried a self test (top cancel and clock), but no beep, no lights, nothing. Is there any doubt that that it could only be the control panel (AP4358958)? Would there be anything else to troubleshoot? Oven has not been moved or anything like that. Thank you.

Symptom: low heat in baking oven. Checked already heating element (20.9 Ohms). Still to check temperature sensor (1100 Ohms @ room temp). If that does not show anything wrong, it must be the control assembly. 1) What range of resistance does the temperature sensor have (for example how much is it at 450°F? 2) In case I replace the control assembly, do I need to replace the OVERLAY as well? I note that the overlay of my current unit is pretty attached to the control assembly plastic holder, and it may break if I try to peel it off. 3) I am inclined to re-mount my existing control assembly and partically insert the connectors to the relays (RED. YELLO, WHITE, BLUE and BLACK (the others will be fully inserted). I hope to double check the application of power (have a good DMM) to the lower bake element. Any comments? 4) It was very difficult to disconnect the large connectors to the control assembly: it only worked when I took it out and used a screw driver to pry them off. Is this normal? Thanks! Henri.

Hello Henri, The normal testing procedure for the oven temperature sensor is at 70°F. It should read 1100O ±5O. While testing the sensor, you should tap on it in case there is an intermittent connection. There are some scales that show resistances at different temperatures, but this is dangerous to test it at these temperatures since the whole body gets very hot. The overlay can be carefully peeled off using a butter knife to apply even pressure so it doesn't tear or separate. The wires are made in a locking fashion to prevent any wires from coming off and causing an electrical shock hazard during shipment. This is not only normal but necessary.

Hello Bob. You will need to test the lower oven bake element WP7406P428-60 and see if it reads closed for continuity. If it is open, you will need to replace the bake element.

Hello M Allman. Try a hard rest on the unit, by disconnecting the power and waiting for around 15 minutes. If the problem continues, you will need to replace the electronic control W10769079.

There has to be an alternative to the "cancel button" for the top oven. I have owned my oven since 2007 and this is the second time it went out. The first time it was within the extended warranty I purchased (luckily). I just called maytag and they said it was $250 for the part and $25 for shipping. This is ridiculous! Obviously this is a common problem. Everywhere I read customers are talking about it. Do they expect me to spend $150-$250 every few years to replace one button that doesnt work? Every other button works perfect, but the cancel button for the top oven (twice)! So please just get us a cheap part to fix it once and for all, like a fuse or something. Not an expensive motherboard for one button that seems to be faulty!

1 Answer

Hello Nick! I do apologize for the continued issues you are having with your Maytag appliance. I understand that it can be frustrating, especially with an expensive part. To correct the cancel button issue you will need to purhcase the electronic control W10769079, if needed the overlay is part number 74009995. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not supply any sort of fuses for your mother board that we would be able to suggest as a replacement part. Thank you for your inquiry.
