Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.

For Whirlpool Washer Drive Block (Part Number: OEM18026517)

Mark for Model Number RTW4640YQ1

Hello Sirs: My washing machine's agitator doesn't not spin in the "wash" stage , I can hear some "click" sound which seems the controller tries to kick the motor on. Such attempt repeated 2 twice at interval of about 60 seconds. The "Fill" works; "Wash", "Rinse" are completely silent; "Final Spin" only pumped out the water. I have inspected the belt which looks good, I disassembled the Shift Actuator, the 49TZY-110, but if it looks good; I tried to take the drive block to inspect, but lack of the tool. I will try to get tool tomorrow. My questions are: 1) how can I validate if the Shift Actuator is broken? 2) how can I validate if the Drive Block is broken? 3) shall i change both Shift Actuator and Drive Block? 4) is possible the motor is broken? is pump driven by motor? Thank you in advance for help. V/r Mark

Mark, It would be suggested to get the tech sheet on the unit and put the washer into a service diagnostic mode and see if there are any error codes.

Monika, I would first check to be sure the machine is stable on the floor and that the floor is not weak. Then check the tub to see if the springs are holding it centered, if not check the springs in the lower section of the machine.

Daniel, a worn tub drive block will usually make a rapid "thunk" noise at the start and end of a spin/drain cycle. Since it was " hard for me to pull out and put it back" the issue will probably be elsewhere. If the hub nut were loose, the tub would "wobble" make noise and could produce an off-balanced load. If we had a better idea of what kind of noise it makes when it makes the noise and where the noise is located we could be more of assistance. Since the washer "stops" during the cycle, you may want to check or recheck the drain pump and drive coupler, the pump bearing could be making a noise and or seizing up, causing a "drag' on the motor causing it to overheat and open the motor thermal protector?

Deidrec for Model Number Kenmore 11026901690

We recently replaced the clutch assembly on our washing machine after a long time of it spinning out slowly at times. After replacing the clutch assembly it worked great for over a month then suddenly it started making a terrible noise when spinning out. The noise seems to be coming from the same area as the clutch assembly was but it is still spinning out great, maybe too good as it has started doing a wobble now also. Any ideas on what the problem could be now? This site has been very helpful and is where I ordered the clutch assembly from but I’m having trouble narrowing this issue down. Thanks!

Hello Deidrec. You need to remove the agitator and check if the basket it tight. Make sure the nut is not loose. Then check the drive block. Then remove the cabinet, jump the lid switch and run the loaded washer and try to pinpoint the problem. Good luck.

Kenn Hodge, you may need to lean the washer back and remove the gearcase from the bottom to separate the basket from the gearcase.

Jeff for Model Number RTW4640YQ0

Our Roper shakes violently during the rinse and spin cycle. I took out the drive block, and it seemed okay. Since I already had the part, I changed it anyway. I examined the rods, and they seemed ok. The springs were fine. I put it back together, and it is acutually worse. Just barely made it through the cycle it was thumping so bad. Incidently, I ran it first with no clothes and it was good, but then with a load in it, it went nuts. Can the springs be bad even if they look fine? Please help!

1 Answer

Jeff, the suspension rods can "look" ok, but unless they are tested by applying pressure. If you press down on the tub as far as possible and quickly let go, the tub should rise up and set without jumping around. If it jumps around, then the suspension rods [W10780048] are bad. Another thing that can cause this issue is the counter balance ring. The counter balance ring has a fluid in it that acts as a counter weight. If the fluid has leaked, then it can cause this issue as well. If you spin the basket by hand and abruptly stop it, you should hear a fluid slosh around near the top. If you do not hear this fluid, then the counter balance ring has failed and the entire basket [W10738339] would need to be replaced.

Timothy, you may want to check the counter balance ring at the top of the basket to ensure it has fluid in it. If you rotate the basket and then quickly stop it, you should hear fluid in the counter balance ring. Another thing you may want to check for is to ensure that the basket is seated fully on the gearcase shaft assembly which is seated with a tub nut underneath the agitator. There will be some vibration on this unit, but it should not shake excessively.
