Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Drive Block (Part Number: OEM18026517)

1 Answer

Hello Peter, The brake is actually part of the basketdrive W10820043. It is accessed by dropping the gearcase and turning it to release the brake while pulling down on it. The spanner nut under the agitator does have to be removed first or the gearcase and basketdrive will not come out.

Peter, When the washer gets done draining the unit then releases the brake and this is the noise that you hear when it goes into the spin cycle. This would be considered normal and the only part that could be potentially bad would be a brake assembly.

Hello Bon1524. Yes, it is common for the drive block to fit tight onto the unit. This will loosen as you use the unit, but should fit very snug.

Greg With Whirlpool Washer for Model Number LSL9244EZO

I have taken off the agitator and there is a tan colored grease inside the bottom of the agitator. There is also old, caked, on dark colored grease on the tube and the sloping down part of the tub near the bottom. This has recently been flaking off into the wash and getting on clothes or in tub when empty and wash is finished. I wiped off the grease from the tube that I could, but can't tell where the the grease is coming from. I don't think this grease should be here--which leads me to believe something else needs be fixed. Why would this grease be there and what repairs do I need to make? Cost to have problem diagnosed is $80 fee + $40-80 labor + whatever parts are required to fix this. Thanks for your help.

Hello Greg. That means the transmission is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Hello Mrs. Ann. This is usually a sign of to much soap. Try cleaning the washer out with vinegar and if it continues, cut back on the amount of soap being used.

Mary for Model Number 11020172001

I have the Kenmore commercial coin opt washer model # 11020172001. I just replaced the drive block few days ago due to the washer stops in the mid cycle where it's suppose to spin. Now it's able to spin but washer stops in the mid cycle again and this time, it won't drain the water leaving it half tub full of water and just stops and sits there. The first time that happened after I replaced the drive block, I tried to test, opened and closed the lid after washer stops mid cycle, it gives me a buzzing/humming sound for about 15 seconds and it washed normal again...I also replaced the lid switch assembly thought that might be the fix..but today the same problem started again. Please help.

Mary, You will want to check the unit to make sure that there is no clog in the drain of the unit. If the pump is seized then the unit will just sit there and not operate. The other thing this could be is the timer contacts sticking and causing unit to not drain and spin.

Hello Horace. Make sure the drain is clear and not blocked. Also, check the shaft insert for the pump. Next make sure water is not siphoning back into the washer. If all is good, you may need to replace the pump.

Mario for Model Number LSC8244EQ1

I replaced a broken drive brake cam and a clutch assembly. when I tried to install the transmission the trust washer on the transmission shaft hits the t-bearing on the spin tube before the transmission mounting posts on the base reach the holes on the transmission housing. there is about 1/2" gap and the three screws can't reach the holes on the posts. I have not removed the brake and drive tube assembly. why did the brake cam driver arm broke in the first place. what did I do wrong that it does not get back together. I would really appreciate the answer because I am retired and can't afford to by a new machine.

1 Answer

Mario, If you are hitting the cam on the brake and drive tube then you need to turn this to the proper direction. If you have it turned wrong then the transmission will have the half inch gap and you will need to adjust it so that it slides into place properly.
