Washer won't spin or agitate? A worn drive block often causes spinning failure. This connects the transmission to the tub. Moderately difficult repair.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Drive Block (Part Number: OEM18026517)

1 Answer

Kenneth, You will want to pull the agitator and inner tub and make sure that there is no damage to the drive block of the unit. If not then the suspension pads would most likely be the issue.

Chris for Model Number Kenmore 80 series 110.29882891

HI. So, my washer stopped spinning during the spin cycle. It was making a loud buzzing so I assumed problem with the motor or transmission. I took both of the unit and ran the motor by itself...motor spins. After a little research, pinned it on the trans. I replaced the trans. No buzzing now, but still no turning. The new trans came with a new clutch assembly so initially I'm not thinking it's the clutch but it didn't come with a new brake cam driver so maybe that's it but the existing one doesn't look broken either. When I run the new motor and trans together outside of the unit, the drive shaft and the clutch both spin. However, I did note that with just a simple touch of my finger to the clutch, I can stop it (shouldn't the motor be able to handle a much heavier load?) I also can spin the drum manually with the brake cam driver. I'm thinking of getting a new clutch kit to replace the brake cam driver. I would hate to have someone come out when I've already pretty much taken the whole thing apart myself. I would also hate to keep throwing money at parts that I can't return. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Chris, Normally when the unit is not spinning it is caused by a faulty clutch assembly. You would also want to check the drive block to make sure that it is not damaged.

John A for Model Number WX46500

I have an "older" Whirlpool washing machine at a rental property and was told by the tenants, that the machine did not spin during the final cycle and that their clothes were left soaking wet. After reviewing your site and several of the videos, I went ahead and replaced the motor coupling but with no success. After reading more posts from your site and again reviewing the videos, I went ahead and replaced the clutch - still no luck. In for a penny / in for a pound, so I also replaced the lid switch - but it still doesn't spin in the final cycle. I had planned on trying one last thing - replacing the drive block but after reading other posts about older machines, I've found that many possible options may still be the cause. The machine is likely in the 20-25 year-old range and while I'd normally just swap such an item out, since the motor and transmission look good(?) and since I've already replaced several parts, I'm not quite ready to give-up. Plus, the tenants really love the way that the machine washes. Is the drive block a likely cause for the problems or is the real issue, something more serious like the transmission or other? Any help would be appreciated.

John, Yes the drive block and the brake assembly would be the best 2 parts to check since the clutch and motor coupler have already been replaced.

Hello Kevin, If the motor coupler 285753A looks good, the issue can be with the clutch or internal to the gearcase. The only way to diagnose the clutch properly is to pull the gearcase down and check it. Damage will be obvious since most of the time there will be parts sitting in the clutch drum if a condition here exists.

Hello Dana, If you bump the top edge of the spin basket with your hand or a rubber mallet it should pop it free.

Hello Shuman, The drive block is probably being damaged by worn tabs on the basketdrive W10820043. If the corners of the tabs are worn so they are rounded instead of square, the weight of the load will cause the drive block to "jump" these tabs and it will eat out the center of the drive block. Since the basketdrive brake tube is stainless and the drive block is made of case metal, the drive block takes the brunt of the wear.

Al, The most likely cause for the thumping noise would be the agitator banging as it spins or the drive block being damaged and causing the unit to thump.

Konrad for Model Number Kenmore washer 11022832100

The washer is basically working fine, but... on occasion... makes a clicking noise when in wash cycle (agitator looks like it's slipping a bit, but still turning) and also in the spin cycle (drum is spinning, but not as smoothly and quickly as it should be). Also, my fluorescent lights in the room flicker in unison with the clicking. At the completion of an entire wash cycle, there is a light electrical smell, almost as if something electrical was getting a little hot. Any idea what the offending part(s) may be? Thanks!

1 Answer

Konrad, This issue sound like it would be caused by a faulty centrifugal switch inside the motor and the motor would need to be replaced.
