Tom September 29, 2013 for Model Number GSW9545JQ0 We experienced a sudden failure -- at the rest period of a wash cycle there was a very loud ongoing staccato bang while the basket continued to spin at high speed. I was able to stop the basket by hand. It turns freely and restarting a spin cycle works fine, and I can again stop the basket by hand (same loud noise). The strange symptom is the accompanying up and down motion of the basket. If I turn it slowly by hand, I can see that the bang is coming from the basket physically dropping at one point in the rotation, so it seems to be on a rise/fall, rise/fall pattern. I estimate the rise/fall to be maybe 1/8 inch or less. Seems like more than just a brake shoe problem?
1 Answer Hello Tom. Based on the information you provided, the drive block WP389140 is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit. Read More...
Tim May 31, 2013 for Model Number Kenmore series 80 washer I have a Kenmore series 80 washer that I have just changed the drive clutch on. While the washer now spins again I still seem to have a problem. Whenever the washer comes out of a spin cycle it sounds like someone is hitting it with a hammer. The noise stops when the drum stops. New brake shoes maybe?
1 Answer Tim, It does sound like the brake shoe could be the reason for the unit making the hammer noise but we would need to model number to provide more information. Read More...
Ricky T December 05, 2012 for Model Number kenmore 110.2642100 Some times the unit will not spin. Not all the time but some times. I moved the basket until it won't turn anymore and it begins to spin. It seems that it isn't a "Hard Part" broken because most of the time it works well. One would think that if it was a "Hard Part" broken, it would always be broken.
1 Answer Hello Ricky, We will need you to verify your model number to properly assist you with this. The model number is coming up as invalid. Please post your model number with a new question on the parts page. http://www.appliancepartspros.com/modelnumber_locator.aspx Read More...
Ed November 18, 2012 for Model Number whirlpool LLR6144BW0 The machine shakes and makes a knocking noise when it is on spin cycle. It aggitates fine and I've changed the clutch assembly and it still does this. What else could it be?

Tim S March 10, 2012 for Model Number LSR8444LQO washer works fine ,but at the end of the spin cycle it sounds like a helicopter noise & shakes the the whole unit.
1 Answer Tim, It could be an issue in the brake shoes and pads, but check the drive block first WP389140 If the interior slots are distorted or damaged, the drive block will continue to spin for several revolutions making a very loud noise. You will need to remove the agitator and the tub locking nut to investigate. Good Luck and Thanks Read More...
Lorista January 07, 2012 for Model Number taws800jq1 Making a loud noise when gos into the spin. When shut off tub will not quite spinning and is at a very fast speed. We must stop with ours hands. Not sure if this is the brakes or something else that allows the tub to keep spinning. Could you let me know what you think. Thanks for any help we are not sure where to start. Lorista
1 Answer Lorista, Sure sounds like the brake pads are worn out or "stuck" in the retracted position. Heres some help from the APP Repair Forum: [http://forum.appliancepartspros.com/washer-repair/3265-replacing-direct-drive-washer-brake-shoes.html], it should be a great help in diagnosing the drive system on your washer. Mark October 12, 2011 Hi, I have a Whirlpool that intermittently cannot get into the high spin mode. Recently, I cannot get it to spin on high. I have made it to the removal of the spin tube (which has no corrosion). I did not have black dust on the floor, but instead, on-top of the transmission. Is this normal due to the brakes stopping the basket when the lid is opened during spin? Or is this an indication that my brakes are dragging during spin and therefore unable to obtain the high spin speed? Note, I have not noticed any burning or smoking smell if it were the brake pads rubbing. If the washer still spins, but cannot get to the high spin, what else could be happening? Thank you in advance-
1 Answer Hello Mark. It sounds like the clutch assembly 285785 is bad and will need to be replaced. The new clutch assembly will come with new brakes as well. Hope this helps. Read More...
Sharon July 16, 2011 I have a whirlpool washer and it will not spin properly. When it does it doesnt get all the water out on heavy loads such as towels or jeans but ususally does fine on the other loads as long as they are not to wet. What could be causing this? I had kind of the same problem a few years back and I think all the repairman replaced was the brake pads.
1 Answer Hi Sharon. Your motor is "coupled " to your transmission by a motor coupler part # 285753A. When this partially fails it can give the same symptoms. If you have black dust under the uint, centered on the floor then this is the Issue. Thank you. Read More...
Mark S. June 02, 2011 for Model Number LSR6332KQO A friend had me look at her washer. Would not drain or spin, so I checked continuity on lid switch (tested bad), and then bypassed it and checked for drain and spin. All worked fine except that when it stoped from spinning it jerks violently and loud like the brake just locks up. Would that be brake pads causing this?
