For Whirlpool Washer Brake Shoe (Part Number: OEM9283305)

Tom for Model Number GSW9545JQ0

We experienced a sudden failure -- at the rest period of a wash cycle there was a very loud ongoing staccato bang while the basket continued to spin at high speed. I was able to stop the basket by hand. It turns freely and restarting a spin cycle works fine, and I can again stop the basket by hand (same loud noise). The strange symptom is the accompanying up and down motion of the basket. If I turn it slowly by hand, I can see that the bang is coming from the basket physically dropping at one point in the rotation, so it seems to be on a rise/fall, rise/fall pattern. I estimate the rise/fall to be maybe 1/8 inch or less. Seems like more than just a brake shoe problem?

Hello Tom. Based on the information you provided, the drive block WP389140 is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Tim, It does sound like the brake shoe could be the reason for the unit making the hammer noise but we would need to model number to provide more information.

Hello Ed, You should check your suspension springs WPW10250667 to make sure that one has not come loose or is bad. Also if it checks ok then you would want make sure that there is not damage to the drive blockWP389140.

Tim, It could be an issue in the brake shoes and pads, but check the drive block first WP389140 If the interior slots are distorted or damaged, the drive block will continue to spin for several revolutions making a very loud noise. You will need to remove the agitator and the tub locking nut to investigate. Good Luck and Thanks

Hi, I have a Whirlpool that intermittently cannot get into the high spin mode. Recently, I cannot get it to spin on high. I have made it to the removal of the spin tube (which has no corrosion). I did not have black dust on the floor, but instead, on-top of the transmission. Is this normal due to the brakes stopping the basket when the lid is opened during spin? Or is this an indication that my brakes are dragging during spin and therefore unable to obtain the high spin speed? Note, I have not noticed any burning or smoking smell if it were the brake pads rubbing. If the washer still spins, but cannot get to the high spin, what else could be happening? Thank you in advance-

Hello Mark. It sounds like the clutch assembly 285785 is bad and will need to be replaced. The new clutch assembly will come with new brakes as well. Hope this helps.

Hi Sharon. Your motor is "coupled " to your transmission by a motor coupler part # 285753A. When this partially fails it can give the same symptoms. If you have black dust under the uint, centered on the floor then this is the Issue. Thank you.
