The Drive Clutch Kit is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool washing machines. As an integral transmission component, it includes the clutch that engages the drive motor to rotate the central agitator or impeller.

Causes of a bad clutch kit include worn parts that have aged from repeated use. Signs include slipping, grinding, or clicking noises from the transmission area.

Symptoms of a faulty clutch kit are:

  • The washer tub failing to turn or agitate clothes during wash cycles
  • Delayed starts or intermittent rotation
  • Vibration or shaking sensed from the frontloader or toploader

This OEM replacement is also compatible with Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Drive Clutch Kit (Part Number: OEM17853897)

1 Answer

Tracy, You will want to check to make sure that there is nothing caught in between the tubs and if there is not then check the wiring of the clutch and if the wiring is good then do a drive system test which is test 3 on the tech sheet to make sure that the clutch is good. The tech sheet can be located inside the cabinet at the front when you lift the main top.

Vic, the shift actuator would need to be tested for voltage being applied from the main control using the wires found at connection J16 from pin 1 to pin 2. With the appliance set to a manual test mode, the spin mode can be briefly started, stopped, then agitation can be set and the wires tested for 120VAC. If the control does not send 120VAC, the control W10581550 has failed. If voltage is sent, but the shifter does not activate properly, the shift actuator WPW10006355 would need to be replaced.

Richard, if the nut will not pop loose when tapping on the wrench with a hammer, the pulley would need to be cut off to carefully grab onto the drive shaft to remove the nut. The clutch kit W10721967 would then need to be replaced.

Marlene for Model Number MVWX700XL1

Washing machine was working fine except it sounded like a jet engine on the spin cycle so we replaced the gearcase and actuator. Gear case was definitely bad. When we run the calibration, the process starts and it agitates and sounds like its pumping, but then all the panel lights come on and the display reads 88. The lights go out and the process continues with spinning the basket and testing the water supply and finishes. Why is the display lighting up? We can run a load and it works fine except every once in awhile the clothes are still very damp when the load finishes. It obviously spun because the clothes are pushed to the sides, but they are still very damp. I can switch the cycle to rinse and spin and it works fine and the water in the clothes is fully spun out. Is the calibration failing? So its not coming up to speed on spin? There are no error codes coming up. Thanks

Marlene, all of the LEDs should turn on when the calibration mode is started. However, based on the information provided, it sounds like either the calibration did not save or the control is not sensing speed properly. In this case, the most likely cause of failure would be the main control W10405819.

Wayne, Based on the description this could be an off-balance load, an un-level machine, or weak suspension rods.

John, unfortunately, the only item that would have oil to produce this smell would be the gearcase W11454734. The clutch would not cause the gearcase to create an oil-burning smell, instead, it would likely be a grinding gear in the gearcase.

Kevin, Put the unit into service diagnostics and see if there are any error codes. There would most likely be an error that is causing this to occur.

Don, based on the information provided, it sounds like there is a failure in the control W11124822. It would be recommended that the appliance error codes are checked in the diagnostic mode to identify if a failure has been recorded. If there are no stored error codes, the control has indeed failed.
