The Spark Igniter is an OEM replacement part for Whirlpool gas ranges. Located inside the oven cavity it initiates combustion using high-voltage electricity. This is a broil igniter for the upper (broil) burner.

Causes of malfunction relate primarily to element degradation from extended heating cycles. Exposure to grease or other residue accumulation shortens the service life by insulating the hot surface.

Symptoms involve:

  • Inability to ignite gas burners using the automatic igniter
  • Safety issues arise requiring manual lighting with matches or lighters
  • Difficulties baking or broiling without consistent flame generation
  • Element replacement prevents further problems and safety hazards

This is a genuine Whirlpool OEM replacement this part is also compatible with Maytag, Jenn-Air and some Kenmore models.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Spark Igniter (Part Number: OEM18034956)

Troy, We do not have the coloring for the wires as it is not listed on the tech sheet. For the oven spark igniter, the broil igniter will go to the J3 terminal on the spark module. The bake will go to J4, the green ground wire will go to GND or J2. The range top will just go in a row and will not make a difference which goes to each terminal j5 - j8.

Jon, You will want to check the oven safety valve for resistance. Check for 216 ohms of resistance from the broil to common. If there is not 216 ohms then the oven safety valve is faulty and would need to be replaced. If this checks ok then the igniter would be the issue.

Rick, You will want to check the oven safety valve for 216 ohms resistance from Bake to common (center terminal) and from broil to common. If there is not proper resistance then the oven safety valve is faulty and would need to be replaced. If this checks ok then you would need to replace the igniter.

Melissa, Check and make sure the burner flame is the proper size, 3/4 to 1 inch in length with the oven bottom panel and flame spreader plate removed. If all's OK , you'll need to start at the DSI Spark Module WPW10331686. Once the burner flame is ignited, the spark igniter should stop and the burner remain on, If the low voltage to the gas valve isn't maintained or the re ignition circuit remains active due to an issue in the board circuitry the burner flame and gas valve will react just as you described.

Karlina, The "F5 E1" error code in the range display indicates and issue in the self clean door latch switch WPW10107820 or wiring. You will also want to check the latch WP9761013 and rod W10078370 to make sure the parts have not come dislodged or loose. If the ERC/clock doesn't have the proper circuit from the latch switch, the oven will not operate.

Hello Glenn, If you are hearing no "click" after start is pressed, I would assume that the clock (AP3777769) has failed.

Jim, Based on the information provided it sounds like you may have bad coils on your oven safety valve. The resistance of the coils when cold should be about 216 ohms. It is possible for the coils to show the correct resistance at cold but have weak coils that open when they heat up.

Sarah, You will want to check the oven safety valve for resistance on the coils. You should have 216 ohms across Bake to common and broil to common. The common is the center terminal. If there is not proper resistance then you would need to replace the safety valve.
