For Whirlpool Brake Rotor (Part Number: OEM18025995)

Ron for Model Number Maytag PAV3240AWW

When on the wash cycle, the agitator spins and the tub spins with it, getting faster and faster and splashing water over the side of the tub. In my research, I'm thinking that I need to replace the brake. Only problem is that it requires a special tool that is no longer available. I've read that some people have replaced the screws with longer ones one at a time, then backing each screw out a little at a time until the 200 lbs of pressure is released. Does this sound reasonable, and how long of screws should I replace the others with? Are there any other options? Is this actually what needs replaced? This is the first issue I've had in the 14 years of owning this washing machine!

Gordon, The first check you need to make would be the thrust bearing 12002213 assembly. If the cams, washers or bearing is distorted or worn badly, when the pulley reverses and attempts to release and raise the brake rotor, and lock the internal clutch spring, it can't and the brake will remain set, and the tub can't move.

Robert, The only tool that you would need would be the brake tool which is not available. You will want to use caution to remove the brake and stator as there is a high tension spring on the back side of it.

Hello Heather, You will want to check to make sure that the pump is not clogged or damaged. When you pull the belt of the pump it should spin freely. If not spinning freely then pull the pump and make sure that nothing has gotten into the pump clogging it. If not then the bearings on pump are bad. Also you want to make sure that the thrust bearing is fully engaging the brake and lifting it properly with no drag.

Buddy for Model Number Maytag washer pav2300aww SN14136393AL

I don't understand the response I got for: "This unit squeals when it stops. Without the agitator being in it does not squeal. The agitator appears to have a bearing in it that feels like it's missing a ball, but I cannot figure out how to get it out or if it comes out (pressed in). The washer stops as it should and runs properly though all cycles, but you recommended, "You will need to order and replace the brake 35-6714, stator 35-6918, and snubber 21002026 on the unit." However, the picture associated with the answer is the complete agitator. In the top of this agitator, where the bolt goes through, is what I think is a bearing that feels like it is missing a ball. It appears to be a pressed-fit bearing which is why I thought I might have to replace the complete agitator assembly. Please help me understand why I would replace the brake, stator and snubber when everything works properly except for a "squeal" that disappears when the agitator is removed. Thanks again

Hello Buddy. There is no ball bearing used in the agitator. If you remove the cap and then remove the bolt and remove the agitator from the unit, the two sections of the agitator will unsnap from each other. As for the noise you were having, it is very common for the Performa models to have the noise you described and it is associated with the parts recommended. When you remove the agitator, you remove the stress on the brake and rotor, and the noise will go away. Keep in mind, Agitator is on one end of the shaft and brake is on the other.

Hello Kevin, When you replaced the thrust bearing there was 2 washers in the kit. You may have installed the smaller one which may not allow the brake to lift enough to spin properly. You could have put the larger one in which could cause the same problem. It may be necessary to put both on in order to lift the brake rotor high enough to allow unit to spin properly.

Thomas, We presume you have a MAV7650AWW, MTG automatic washer. The easiest way to test the brake is to start the unit in the regular cycle at the final spin / drain portion. Aloow the washer to "ramp up" to the high speed spin( 60 to 90 seconds) then raise the lid and listen, for a squealing or rumbling noise, this would indicate excess wear to the brake rotor pad. When you raise the lid, the washer spin basket should "stop" in 3 to 5 revolutions, if the brake is engaging properly. If there is a noise, or the spin tub coasts to a stop, you'll need to dismantle the thrust bearing assembly 12002213 and check, clean and lube the brake rotor splines WP35-6714 to insure proper rotor operation.

Jeff, The most likely issue is the thrust bearing assembly 12002213. This component, locks and unlocks the brake rotor, which in turn causes the transmission gears to lock for the spin cycle. You also want to check the drive belt for excessive wear, and the motor and slide plate for free movement. Thanks

Cesar, No, this does not mean you need to replace the transmission 35-6615. You do want to check or replace the "Thrust Bearing Kit "12002213and belt WP22003483.If the bearing and cams are worn out or distorted, they will not raise and unlock the brake, or lock the transmission and allow the washer tub to spin.
