For Whirlpool Refrigerator Water Inlet Valve (Part Number: OEM18054099)

Chet for Model Number GSF26C4EXY02

Freezer was blowing cold but items were soft, and water dripping through ice door. Water dispenser is full power but no water going to ice side. It is now freezing and bottles of water iced up-ed. Possibly someone did not close the door all the way last night. Now all day and no ice. Unplugged and took off back and measured the resistance on dual water valve, one is 215 ohms and other is 260 ohms. I think valve is ok and yesterday it was making ice fine. Any thoughts to check?

1 Answer

Chet, it would be recommended that the freezer temperature be verified using a thermometer. If it is not below 10°F, the ice maker will not harvest properly. If it is at the proper temperature, the ice level optics may need to be wiped with a q-tip to ensure they are not blocked by moisture that may have occurred from the door being ajar.

Water coming from my fridge door is slowed to a trickle, and the ice maker is making smaller cubes. I have replaced the replaced water filter, checked reservoir, checked hose/connector under freezer door, replaced the single inlet valve, and just yesterday replaced the dual inlet valve. When I replaced the dual value, water initially came out of the door very quickly and slowed to the same trickle within 20 secs. I know there is talk that my issue could be the filter housing, but curious if this symptom points to anything in particular.

Follow up question regarding inlet valves on Whirlpool french door refrigerator. I checked the water flow of the connectors under the freezer door, and water was only a trickle (about as much as was coming from the door. This leads me to believe the problem was the dual inlet valve (as the single inlet valve had good flow when I did the same test). I ordered the dual valve (WPW10258562) and swapped it out, now no water comes out of the door. I swapped the old part back in to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong, and water slowly came out (as initially experienced). I did this twice with the same results, is it safe to assume the part I received was defective?

1 Answer

Hello Patrick, If the model number is actually GSF26C5EXY00, this could be the water valve but could also be caused by the water filter housing WPW10238123 if the water reservoir is not freezing.

Initial Post: I have a Whirlpool french door refrigerator, and the water coming out of the door has gradually slowed to a trickle over the last few months. I swapped out WPW10238100 (single inlet valve), but that didn't do anything. I have also checked the filter and supply pressure, and both seem fine. Wondering if the dual inlet valve (WPW10258562) could be the culprit, but wanted some feedback before purchasing. The only other recommendation I have heard is the filter housing, but wondering if there is a pump that could be failing? TIA, so sick of it taking 2 min to fill a cup of water haha. Follow Up: Mention that it could be a frozen reservoir in the fridge, but it appears fine. Also a mention that it could be the filter housing or a frozen line in the door. Would there be visible signs of damage to confirm the housing needs to be replaced, and can I assume reference is to a tube/hose in the freezer door (how do you check that)? I changed the singular inlet valve with no improvement, would the dual valve not be a culprit as well (before these other items?)

1 Answer

Hello Patrick, to check where this water flow restriction is, start under the freezer door at the water dispenser tubing connector, disconnect the tubing and use the water dispense pad to activate the water valve, check the flow rate, then work your way back to the 2x water valve doing the same check. The tubes are attached using John Guess type fittings, to release the tubing press in on the locking collar at the connector and pull the tubing out.

Brock, as the water filter has been checked (verified that it is newer than 6 months and not clogged) and the water valve has been replaced, the reservoir tank W11802492 in the refrigerator section would need to be inspected. If the reservoir tank is partially frozen, it can cause the symptoms that are occurring. If the water tank is not frozen, and the tubing in the door is not frozen, the most likely failure would be the filter housing WPW10238123.

This refrigerator has a built-in water filter and is fed by ~ 12 psi output of the under-sink reverse osmosis supply tank. The issue is a slow (~1/2 cup/day) leak from the water dispenser. The icemaker is working fine. Inspecting the rear I see two solenoid valve assemblies, the W10258562 dual output, and the W10238100 single output. It makes sense that the dual output unit serves the ice and water dispensers, so I am inclined to replace it first to address the leak, but what is the function of the single output valve? Thanks

1 Answer

Hello Jim, The water valves will not be the issue since the water valves require a minimum of about 40PSI to close properly. IF there is only 20PSI present, you will need to contact the RO company or a plumber to install an additional component to raise the water pressure to the minimum requirements set by the manufacturer.

James, it sounds like the inlet valve is leaking water through when not energized, I would replace the inlet valve, part number is WPW10258562

We have a Whirlpool Gold side by side Refrigerator. It is approximately 3 years old. Inspection revealed that the water inlet valve has developed a slow leak. We do have high mineral hard water in our region. It is also connected to the hot water line as recommended by the installer. Installer said that hot water heater helps in reducing mineral build up. Is this true? Under these conditions what is the normal life span of a typical original inlet valve. Does hard water cause buildup and back pressure in the valve to cause leak?

1 Answer

Elias, Yes heating water will partially reduce the amount of minerals but it is not recommended to install a refrigerator with hot water hook up.

The ice maker on my Whirpool side by side refrigerator suddenly stopped making ice but the water dispenser is still working. The issue is that the ice machine is not getting water. First thing I did was change the filter. That didn't do anything. When I manually pour water into the ice mold, the ice machine makes and dispenses the ice properly. I checked the tubing that is visible around the back of the unit and which connects to the inlet valve and nothing seems frozen. I even ran a hairdryer for a few minutes around the opening where the water pours into the ice maker just in case there was frozen build up but there was nothing there. Does this sound like there's an issue with the water inlet valve or is there something else I should try before ordering a new valve? Thanks!

1 Answer

Mike, Based on your description and all the work you've done to isolate the issue, the WPW10258562 water inlet valve is the most likely problem. It is not uncommon for one solenoid to fail and the other to operate on a "dual" valve assembly.

1 Answer

Mick, The isolation valve WPW10238100 should leak when either selection is made, not one or the other. It is the valve that allows water to enter the inlet valve WPW10258562 and that valve distributes water to the dispenser or ice maker. Yes, the dual inlet valve could be the cause of the slow or weak ice maker solenoid on the dual valve. Under the circumstances you may want to consider replacing both valves.
