Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Gas Valve With Coils (Part Number: OEM18022677)

Patty, The flames will stay on until the cycling thermostat reads that the temperature has been met and opens up. With no clothes in the dryer and properly vented this would be about 1 to 2 minutes after it fires. With a load of wet clothes it could be 20 minutes or more. If the flame is going out rapidly check the venting of the dryer to make sure that there is no clogging.

Francis, The flame will stay lit on the dryer until the cycling thermostat is satisfied and then the flame will shut off. Once the cycling thermostat cools the unit will cycle again. If the flame is shutting of quickly then you will want to make sure that your venting is clear from the blower wheel to the outside of home as this can cause longer drying times.

I have replaced the timer switch because it wasn't moving. The dryer now goes thru the cycles, but sometimes it takes a few cycles to get the clothes dry. I took the front panel off to see what was going on. I start the dryer. It ignites and then a flame. The flame stays on for about 30 seconds then goes off. When that happens, I hear grinding sound like the gas valve isn't working properly. I've replaced the coils and thermostat. So could it be the gas valve?

Hello Michelle, The gas valve WP306176 sounds like it is malfunctioning as you suspect. Be sure if you change it yourself to check for leaks with lightly soaped water.

Mark, We're taking for granted you're discussing the burner flame cooling down and shutting off, not the dryer itself ? Presumably you don't have an issue with the gas supply to the dryer. You should have 3.0 to 4.0 WCI constant at the wall connection/shut off. Your next check should be to check the burn time, and dryer exhaust temperature, with the dryer vent disconnected. That should be an avrage of 155 dgrs, and the burner flame should be on for approximately 60 seconds, with no load in the dryer. A clogged or restricted exhaust pipe or hood,or lint build up in the blower housing(under the lint filter) will cause the dryer to cycle the hi limit switch and shut the burner down early. If the burner still cycles to quick, with the vent off, then it's time to check or replace the cycling thermostat or hi limit switch. Thanks

Hello Jim, You either have a bad coil 279834 on the safety valve or the safety valve WP306176 itself has failed. The part number I included for the safety valve includes the coils and valve.

Have approx 15 year old maytag dryer. Left outside in NYS covered from Feb to june. Worked fine before ; upon reinstallation, gas ignitor glowed, gas valved opens, after about 30 seconds a huge fire erupted around the tube base where the cover is adjustable. Do I need a new valve or can I get it fixed. Maytag 25mo1a - maytag part number 3-06176 - also need new ignitor as I cracked the one I have. Please quote new or refurb valve with new ignitor. Thanks Bob M.

Hello Dennis. I think I would inspect the burner first. If the flame continues with the high-limit thermostat by-passed, it seems to me that it must be getting too hot on the side of the combustion cone where the high-limit thermostat mounts. The burner directs the flame so if the flame is shooting out to one side, this could cause this issue. Also, I would double check to ensure the hi-limit WP303395 and cycling thermostats WP307250 haven't been inadvertantly installed in the wrong places. I don't believe the issue is in the gas valve at all because by-passing the high-limit thermostat will not affect the gas valve. Hope this helps!
