Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Dryer Gas Valve With Coils (Part Number: OEM18022677)

1 Answer

Caleb, The first check to make is at the exhaust vent pipe and hood, A clogged vent system can cause the dryer to overheat and cycle the hi limit switch in a very short time period. Also remove the lint filter and remove any lint that has accumulated in the duct. If the burner cycles off in 30 seconds with the vent disconnected from the dryer, you'll need to check or replace the thermostat(s) WPY304475 or WP303395

Jim for Model Number MDG2500BWW

I have MDG2500BWW gas dryer that is heating erratically. Ignitor cycles and glows, but often flame will not start. When this happens, there is a smell of natural gas out the vent. Have replaced ignitor and valve coils (all read proper resistances). In checking cables to coils, two prong coil cycles between 0.4V when ignitor glows, to 120V when ignitor turns off. So the coil should be energized when ignitor goes off. For three prong coil, read same voltage center ground to one outside prong, and read 118V to 120V to the other outside prong. Starting to suspect gas valve (utility work recently done on our street), maybe weak flow or valves not fully opening. Any way to check/clean? suggestions? Thanks.

Ron, Yes it is possible for the gas valve to have a leak and produce a gas odor. Fortunately, it's not a common occurrence. There could be debris or moisture in the valve body keeping the diaphragms from closing completely, the diaphragms could have developed a pin hole , and several other possibilities. With the power removed and the gas supply line open, you can use a soapy. bubbly solution and check for gas leaks around the solenoids, gas line connector on the valve, and from the burner orifice.

William, At this point, would have to suspect that you're loosing the neutral leg of the heat circuit through the motor centrifugal switch or wires. When the dryer is running, the motor switch heat circuit (blue and black wires) closes and complete the circuit to the neutral leg of the dryer cord. if the switch circuit opens, or if the blue or black wire have a loose or frayed connection the circuit "opens" and there'd be no power through the gas valve, and there'd be no ignition or heat.

Nick, With the flame sensor, igniter, cycling thermostat, high limit and thermal fuse checking ok and the gas coils being replaced then the issue will be in the gas valve WP306176.

Hello Mike. You need to check and see if the igniter is weak and replace it if needed. Also, check for gas leaks at the gas valve assembly on the unit.

Hello Kerry. Check the venting system and make sure the blower wheel is not clogged. If it is good, you may have bad coils causing the short cycle.
