For Whirlpool Dryer Gas Valve With Coils (Part Number: OEM18022677)

Guy_Sparky for Model Number MDG4000BWW

Maytag Neptune Natural Gas Dryer purchased in 2000. Unit dries clothes but there is frequently a buzzing sound from the gas valve when as it tries and fails to cycle-fire the burner. After a "wait period" it will try again and eventually it will successfully ignite the burner. The igniter heats normally during the events. I'd guess the entire gas valve is suspect but any chance it might just be the coils? Coil kit is a lot less expensive than the entire gas valve but I hate to waste the money on a coil kit if the entire gas valve is going bad. I am an electrical engineer so I can easily test coil resistance if I know what the acceptable coil resistance should be.

1 Answer

Guy_sparky, You can test the coils using a multi-meter. The two prong coil will read 1,000-1,300 ohms, and the three prong coil will read 1,300-1,400 ohms across prongs 1&2, and 500-600 ohms across prongs 1&3.

Mark for Model Number DWSR463GG8WW

I'm troubleshooting a heat issue on a GE Dryer DWSR463GG8WW. The heat will come on but will shut off after a minute or two. Once the heat turns off, I will hear a slight screechy sound. I've tested continuity on all thermostats, coils and the igniter, all seemed fine. I cleaned out some lint buildup in the Trap Duct and airflow doesn't seem to be an issue. I don't see any reference to a thermal fuse for this model, I'm wondering if it just has a different name. I'm thinking about changing the coils, but could this be the gas valve?

1 Answer

Mark, your coils are the likely issue and is what I would replace, the part number 279834 is for a kit that has both coils. There is a small chance it could be the valve sticking as well but not likely.

Hello Parvez, the burner is cycling on the high limit thermostat, this is will happen if the airflow is disrupted or blocked in some way, the blower is pulling air into the burner assembly keeping the flame centered in the duct , up the heater duct into the drum, thru the drum thru the lint filter into the blower housing and pushed out the exhaust, if the airflow is disrupted the burner flame will cause the hi-limit thermostat to trip, turning off the burner then once is cools and resets allows the burner to restart.

Andrew for Model Number DG303

Hi appliance repair, I have an older DG303. My symptoms are that the dryer turns on normally, igniter glows for about ten seconds (seems very bright), then a click sound, and the igniter dulls. Gas is releasing through valve. I can smell the gas but no ignition. I thought it was initially bad solenoid coils so I just replaced, no fix. Old coils also tested good. High limit thermostat tests good, flame sensor tests good, igniter tests about 74 ohms resistance, cycling thermostat tests good. Only thing I noticed was a sort of odd screeching noise once or twice during the gas release, but can't pinpoint with any regularity. No ignition at all of the gas that does come out - it seems to come out too late for the igniter to ignite it. Bad gas valve?

1 Answer

Andrew, based on the description of the issue and that the valve has a screeching when the gas is being released, more than likely the gas valve [WP306176] is the issue.

David, The booster coil should read 700 ohms resistance and secondary should read 600 ohms resistance. Remember the ignitor needs to draw 3.4 amps to open the gas valve and the flame sensor contacts open when its hot enough and that sends voltage to the secondary coil. Ignitor can be checked with an amp clamp if you have one.

Hello Danny. Yes, it sounds like you will need to replace the gas valve on the unit.

Bradley, It sounds like the whistling noise would most likely be in the valve. If the valve is not fully opening it can still operate but could cause the whistling noise that you are hearing. Also would want to check the rollers but that would be more of a screeching noise.

Hello Patrick. Sorry, we do not charge for technical help. You must have posted the question on another website. As for the issue, your model does not have an element. It is gas. It sounds like the gas coils 279834 have failed and will need to be replaced on the unit.
