The back wall of my freezer was frozen but working and the bottom or fridge section was not cold Paula S. • St. Louis , MO • July 09, 2017
Well my reliable handyman brother told me he fixed his fridge, as he had same problem. Freezer working but fridge warm. He suggested I order Defrost Heater Kit. I looked it up on your website and found part but noticed Defrost Thermostat as well. So I ordered both. Anyhow he installed the thermostat only. Fridge is cooling. We did not install Defrost Heater Kit. Gonna see if we even need to? So far so good with just the thermostat. We'll be watching to see if back wall freezes up again.

The Water Tank Heater is an OEM component for GE bottom-mount refrigerators offering internal water and ice dispensing. Located within the drinking water reservoir, it facilitates antibacterial heating cycles. Dependable water delivery relies on a functioning tank heater.
Symptoms of failure include:
- Absence of hot water from the dispenser or ice maker
- Cloudy or sedimented water quality needs frequent filter changing
- Mold or bacterial growth detected within the reservoir
Causes involve cracked or porous heater elements that cannot transfer thermal energy effectively over extended years, loose wiring terminals cutting off electric current, or mineral buildup hindering heat transfer to the surrounding tank.
Replacing with this genuine GE heater ensures optimized reservoir sanitization through precise temperature regulation. Compatible replacements include models for Hotpoint, RCA, and Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators seeking to restore hot water dispensing and purification features.

Part Number: 5300JB1100Q
This sheathed defrost heater mounts at the evaporator and melts frost during the automatic defrost cycle to restore airflow and stable temperatures. Replacing a failed heater helps prevent ice-clogged coils, warm spots, and noisy fan interference.
- Melts frost from the evaporator coil during the defrost cycle to maintain proper airflow
- Symptoms of failure: persistent ice on the back panel, weak cooling, or the evaporator fan striking ice
- A failed heater can cause long run times and temperature swings
- Replace if the element tests open/short or shows visible damage
Includes: 1 sheathed defrost heater Installation notes:
- Disconnect power before service; allow components to warm to reduce risk of cracking brittle plastics
- Remove shelves and the evaporator cover; carefully defrost ice—do not chip or pry against the fins
- Transfer original clips/insulators if present; route wires as original and make firm electrical connections
- After reassembly, ensure the drain area is clear and the fan spins freely
