  • The dryer failing to start or begin the cycle when the switch is pressed

Questions & Answers

For Ge Push-To-Start Switch (Part Number: OEM14942709)

Leigh, the push to start switch WP3398094 and the thermal fuse WP3392519 would be tested for continuity while the dryer is unplugged. A test that can be done to identify a possible failure is to open the door and tape the door switch down. With the start button pressed and held, does the drum rotate? If it does, then the start switch has failed. If not, try to rotate the drum. If the drum starts rotating and continues to run after the push button is released, the motor 279787 start windings have failed. If the unit still does not run, then testing the components would be necessary at this juncture.

Karen, Make sure the drum is not bound up by reaching in and spinning it by hand. If it will move freely then the motor would need to be replaced. If not then find whatever is stuck and stopping the drum from spinning.

Linda, the push to start is going to be a part of the control assembly WH12X10176. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has discontinued this part and it is no longer available.

Tom, the two brown wires would go onto one post and may need to be re-terminaled together or using a terminal jumper TJMA02896-1. The terminal jumper would be the best option for this repair.

Hello Leigh, the most common cause of this issue on dryers is losing the run windings on the motor part number WE17X22217. Hope this helps!

Leigh, with the power disconnected, you may want to test the interlock switch WD21X10261 found near the motor WE17X22217. The switch will need to be activated and tested for continuity. If the switch has continuity while in the activated state, then the centrifugal switch in the motor has failed. If the switch does not have continuity when activated, then the switch has failed.

Stacey for Model Number GTD42EASJ2WW

My dryer will not start at all and makes no noise to anything when you press the start button. It began as an intermittent issue where sometime it would turn on and other times it would not. Now it will not at all. I looked at some of the Q&A on here and got a EverStart 10711WDI meter and checked the start switch. No matter what setting I put the meter on when I touch meter on the back of the starter switch as explained, the meter never did anything. Does that mean I need a new starter switch or am I using the wrong type of meter?

1 Answer

Stacey, the meter is fine and should work satisfactorily. You need to set the meter on the "continuity" setting(vertical lines, looks similar to the volume or speaker setting) label and disconnect the wires from the switch, attach or hold the meter leads to the two terminals, then press the button. A start switch is a "momentary" contact switch and will have "continuity" (and the meter will beep) only when the button is pressed. If there is no continuity or beep when the button is pressed, the start switch has failed and will need to be replaced.

Precious, For the unit to run the belt has to be in good shape and not broke, there is a belt switch on this unit. Also, there is a high limit and a thermostat on the heater housing that has to read closed on a continuity test and the door switch is the only things that will stop the unit from running. If all these tests good then replace the motor.

Sunil, With the drum not turning without moving it by hand this issue would be caused by a weak start winding on the motor or the rollers on the unit are seizing up.
