For Samsung Evaporator Assembly (Part Number: OEM12516006)

Hopeful Pedro, You will want to pull the back wall off in the refrigerator and freezer compartments and check the coils for being iced up. If they are iced up then it sounds like it would be an issue of a faulty sensor for the defrost on both sides or the control board is faulty.

I need to order the evaporator assembly AP4171999. I read a customer response about the part leading me to believe that I won't have to solder or worry about freon escaping It follows: Bad defrost heater and sensor (display showing code 3 at startup) Kenneth P. • Centerville, GA • September 22, 2014 Appliance: Samsung Samsung Refrigeration RS2578BB/XAA My Repair & Advice Purchased new evaporator/heater/sensor assembly from appliance parts. Removed new heater, sensor and wire harness from new assembly and from existing unit in refrig section. Then installed new heater and sensor on old refrig evaporator, avoiding complex soldering and recharge with Freon. Once repaired all failure indications cleared and refrigerator section performing like new. Also purchased new heater for water tank and several broken plastic parts that went in in 2 minutes. Changed door light switch which had become intermittent. Which is correct? All service sites that I have contacted are a week out on any service calls! Also, I measured the resistance of my drain heater and it measure 4300 ohms, Part number AP4137756. Is that OK? Sounds a little high as it would yield about 3.5 Watts. Please advise soon so that I can possibly fix this myself. I am vey technical but don't have HVAC tools. - Thank you!

Robert, It is possible to replace the heater on the evaporator without having to replace the entire evaporator. You would have to order the evaporator assembly. Once you receive you will need to remove the heater part of it off the old evaporator and install the new heater part off the new evaporator. This will take time and patience as you have to bend the tabs that hold the heater to the evaporator. As for the drain heater, the resistance of 4300 ohms would be higher than normal and you would want to replace this also.

My Refrigerator is warm (60) but the freezer is OK (-6). This is after I got 34 on the frig and flashing and pulled the power for 10 mins to reset things. I pulled the freezer inside back panel and the unit was not really frozen up, just a little frost. The circulation fan is running but I don't feel that much air blowing in the frige side with the door switch closed. What do you think I need? I opened the freezer door with the power off for about 15 mins and observed no Ice or frost, put the panel with fan back in and am observing the results. so far after about 1 1/2 hours I have 14 on the freezer and 63 on the fridge. I think that maybe the fridge won't get any cold air until the freezer reaches temp. ( I set it to a higher 8 degrees just to see if the fridge side starts dropping.) I don't know if my assumption is correct or not.

Robert, The refrigerator and freezer work independent of each other and you will want to pull the rear cover in the refrigerator section. Check the coils in the refrigerator to make sure that the coils are not frosted or impacted with ice. If they are then test the defrost sensor. This will be the most likely cause of the issue.

Roger, You will want to check the evaporator in the freezer compartment and see what kind of frost pattern there is and make sure that the coils are not impacted by ice. If there is ice impacting the freezer evaporator then you will want to check the defrost sensors and defrost heater to make sure that they are good. If they check ok then the control board would be the issue.

Our Samsung refrigerator started flashing at 34 degrees and would not cool. I disassembled the panel inside the refrigerator and found severe ice build up covering the evaporating core. I also noticed that the cooling fan was working fine. So I used a hair dryer to remove the ice build up and the fridge worked fine for 2 days. But now the refrigerator temperature is flashing and the refrigerator does not cool. The freezer part is working fine. So what part would you recommend to replace to solve this problem.

1 Answer

Johnson, The most common issue with the coils building up ice on them would be that the defrost sensor on the evaporator coils has failed and would need to be replaced. The sensors that you would want to replace would be part numbers DA32-10105R and DA47-00095E.

Freezer works ok, but the Fridge side freezes up in the coils every 3 to 4 weeks. From reading your Q&A sounds like I need to replace the Evaporator Assembly, which also contains the Defrost unit (not sold separately). I also read in a post that the defrost unit could be removed from the new evaporator assembly and replaced without having to mess with the cooling stuff. How do I identify what the defrost element looks like when looking at the evaporator assembly? Is the defrost unit easily removed and replaced? Thanks

1 Answer

Brian, When you look at the evaporator there is the loop that is attached to the drain pan. This part is the heater assembly. You will want to remove this part from the evaporator part and it will come off as an assembly. You would then remove the one from the old evaporator and install the new one.
