1 Answer

Doug, make sure the unit is level and the strike WP8574157 is secured to the top of the dishwasher and is not loose. If those are fine you'll need to check and replace the latch 8193830. Thanks.

Phil for Model Number KUDP02CRBS3

I have the same problem with our Kitchenaid dishwasher popping open that seeming hundreds of others have. I have had limited success bending the strike (MFG part # 8574157) down. It seems very flimsy and ineffective (metal fatigue?). Now the door pops open ten or more times during a cycle. I intend to order a new strike, hoping that will solve the problem. I am also thinking of replacing the latch (8193830), since this is the part that engages the strike. Should I replace only the strike first to see if that solves the problem, or should I replace both? The latch is much more involved to replace. I am hoping the strike alone will solve the problem. I have checked the hinges and the door will stay open at any position, so I don't think there's a problem there.

Hello Phil, You should replaced the striker first then if you are still having problem the latch. Also make sure that the unit is level. An unlevel unit can cause the door to not latch properly.

Hello Samuel, You should first check the unit for leveling and proper mounting to the cabinet. If these things check out, I would suspect the door switches WP8269209. Also check the door latch assembly 8193830 for any damage as it holds the switches in position.

Hello Bob. You will need to disconnect the power to the unit. Then remove the screws securing the inner door panel. Remove the inner door panel and remove the cover off the control board. Now you can access the door latch assembly 8193830. Remove the switches and reinstall on the new latch. Reinstall with the new latch in reverse order. Hope this helps.

Jeff W. for Model Number kitchenAid kudso1FLBT3

This is not so much of a question as it is more an observation. I just finished fixing this dishwasher because it was no longer latching securely after replacing the two counterbalance ropes. What I found when the ropes eventually broke is the door slammed down on its own and that it literally bent the hinges some. Upon removing the hinges I could see how they were bent. I was able to straighten the hinges, chances are most people probably would have to replace them. One way I could tell they were bent before disassembly was when I closed the door the bottom of the door would strike the inner lower dish rack. My suggestion for most people would be to replace the hinges. People complaining of the door no longer remaining latched after replacing the counterbalance ropes, most likely have this scenario and should replace the hinges. At first I thought it was the latch failing I disassembled the latch itself and found very little wear after seven years of operation.. After straightening the hinges I was amazed at how much more securely the door latched. Thank you I'm just passing this information on to you. The question and answer information I found on your website was extremely helpful. When the hinges bend this causes the lower portion of the door to be cocked inward and upward causing an oversensitive latching scenario.

Hello Dave. Check and make sure the dishwasher is level after replacing the door spring ropes. If not, it can cause the door to pop open, and release from the latch 8193830. Also make sure there is not to much tension on the springs for the door. Hope this helps.

Randy for Model Number kudu02frss3

It seems to me that Kitchenaid has a design flaw with the strike on this dishwasher in that it is not strong enough to hold the door closed, or at least get weaker with use. Again, the new strike I got from another model was much stronger and holds the door shut, but won't "acknowledge" that the dishwasher is door is closed because it was not wide enough. Hence, the apparent need for a stronger strike for this model that will hold the door shut. Seems like a lousy design to me.

Hello Randy! I do see your point. Unforuntately, at this time that is the only strike available that the manufacturer has supplied to their vendors. Sorry!

Hello Randy! Are you speaking of the door strike WP8574157 when you say clasp? This is the original strike on the dishwasher. If it has broken it will not hold the door shut. Thanks.

Hello Craig. Check the latch assembly and where the wiring harness goes out the door, to make sure they are not binding up the door. Hope this helps.
