Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Washer Transmission Neutral Drain Kit (Part Number: OEM20512728)

1 Answer

Hello Don. The way the unit goes into spin cycle is the motor reverses on the washer. Then the paw arm in the kit places the gears into spin mode. If your washer is draining, it is reversing. If it is not the motor is not reversing. If it is reversing, then you need to replace the gear box and not just the kit. This way the seals are new on the unit as well.

Don, With the unit agitating and making a loud banging noise when spinning, the issue would be with the gearcase 3360629.

Kaden, you're probably on target, thinking it's the neutral drain kit 388253A. as you're removing the components you'll also want to check the drive basket tube assembly for damaged lever and the clutch for excess wear . then remove the gearcase and tear it down and replace the neutral drive kit.

Peewee, You will want to check the motor capacitor WP8572717 to make sure that it is good. The capacitor is a run capacitor and could be weak and when there is a load on it to spin it may not have enough power to allow the unit to start. If the capacitor checks ok then check the brakes to make sure that they are not dragging and if this is ok then the neutral drain would most likely be the issue.

Hello Mike. Check and see if the drive block WP389140 is bad or if the clutch is bad and will need to be replaced on the unit.

Bob, You will want to check to make sure that the pressure hose is not leaking. Also check to make sure that there are no cracks in the outer tub that would cause the leaking and check to make sure that the leak is not coming from the centerpost seal in the middle of the outer tub above the transmission.

Nate for Model Number LSR8233JQ1 Whirlpool Washer

My washer is having an issue with the spin cycle, I've replaced the clutch and coupler (which both ended up being fine but I replaced them anyway). It will sometimes go into spin no problem, but other times it won't. The agitator works fine, and it pumps water out fine even when it doesn't spin. When it doesn't spin I can shake and bounce the basket a few times and it will eventually kick in, but every time it does kick in I hear a loud klunk sound. Not continuous, just a single klunk. Is the drain kit a possible fix for this?

Nate, You will want to check the drive block on the unit, which is located under the tub. If in the center of the drive block you do not see 2 metal pieces in a groove on either side then the drive block is bad and would need to be replaced.

Steve for Model Number Whirlpool Thin Twin LTE5243DQ3

During the wash cycle, the washer agitates, drains, pauses (which I believe disengages the neutral drain function) then spins with intermittent spray; all normal. During the rinse cycle, the washer agitates, drains, never pauses, & never spins. It does perform the spray function & stops at the end of the cycle. Since spin works during one part of the cycle but not the other, I am led to believe that an internal cam switch in the timer that feeds the motor is not performing the pause that allows the spin function to begin. Do I have a bad timer or something else?

1 Answer

Steve, You will want to check the motor winding for the high speed spin. This would be blue to white on the motor. Check the resistance. If the winding is bad then the motor will not spin in final rinse even though it spins during the wash cycle. If the motor checks ok then the issue will either be in the fabric selector switch or the timer.
