The Suspension Rod Kit is an OEM part for Whirlpool washing machines. This kit includes four suspension rods designed to support the washing machine's tub assembly. By absorbing vibrations and stabilizing the tub during the spin cycle, these rods play a crucial role in reducing noise and preventing the washing machine from moving excessively.

Causes of a bad Suspension Rod Kit can include normal wear and tear, overloading the washing machine, or frequent heavy cycles that put extra strain on the rods.

Symptoms of a bad Suspension Rod Kit include:

  • The washing machine is excessively noisy during the spin cycle.
  • The tub seems unbalanced or moves more than usual, even with light loads.
  • The washing machine "walks" or moves from its original position during operation.
  • Unfinished cycles or error codes indicating an unbalanced load.

This OEM Whirlpool part can also be used on Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Magic Chef, Admiral, Norge, Roper, and Kenmore/Sears brand appliances.

Questions & Answers

For Whirlpool Suspension Rod Kit (Part Number: OEM17955348)

1 Answer

Chuck, You did install the complete kit(including the bushings and sockets)? You didn't apply any lubricant to the sockets and shims? and everything is "seated" and attached properly to the tub and cabinet suspension apron? Is the washer level in both directions and all four feet are on solid flooring. Then check the center bolt on the motor rotor, and make sure it is as tight as possible and check the cabinet(especially the bottom edge) to make sure it hasn't gotten dented, bent or deformed. The last check would be to remove the wash basket and check the W10820039 Drive Hub for debris, detergent or fabric softener, etc. and distortion of the hub "teeth". If the tub cannot reset on the drive hub properly it can "wobble" and go off balance in the spin cycle.

Robert, It is possible that the springs have came out of there resting spot. You will have to lift the lid to expose the top of the shock. Two screws in the rear and slide the top forward and up.

Please help.. I have a Maytag XL Bravo washer.. My problem is I receive a "UL" code almost every load.. My fix has been to Tilt the machine back, reach underneath with an Allen Wrench, and Tighten the screw in the center.. This allows the machine to clear the code and display the "Minutes Left in Cycle", I press Start, and machine continues with no more problems.. I am now tired of doing this.. Please suggest a solution.. I have not tried anything else..

T, to correct the bolt loosening, blue loctite can be used to stop the bolt from backing out.

JJ, The parts that you are going to check are the ones that you would check. If all of these things check ok then the issue will be a control board issue.

Robert S for Model Number Whirlpool WTW5000DW1

Hello AppliancePartsPros, I’m trying to determine if I need to replace the suspension rods on my washer (heavy banging and shaking during spin cycle). With an empty washer, I push down on the drum and it springs back up. If I push hard to one side, I can bang the floor simulating the sound/bang we get when the washer starts “walking”. I don’t want to replace the suspension rods if that is not the problem (obviously). Can the springs be intact, but weak? Also, I ran the washer on an empty quick cycle. With no weight in the drum, the walking/banging was far less pronounced, but it is there. I guess I don't know how much a washer should vibrate, if at all. It is a Whirlpool WTW5000DW1. Thanks!

Hello Robert, start by removing the wash plate and check the inner tub mounting to the top shaft of the gearcase. The basket should not be loose or off-center, it has an internal balance ring and if spun empty should have little vibration or shaking. If this is where the problem is, adding clothes will just make it worse. If this all checks out correctly then replace the suspension rods.

Bradley, The F70 error indicates an overload issue. For this, you will need to check to make sure that there is nothing caught between the tubs and if the rotor appears to be rubbing on one side then it could be that the shaft is damaged and need to replace the shaft and bearing kit. The other error is for a lid lock issue which you would look at the tech sheet that is in the unit and do test 8 on page 6.

Kevin, your washer has 4 suspension rods, part number is W10780048. Release the top, at each corner of the washer cabinet, you will see the suspension rod, it goes down to the bottom of the outer tub. make sure you replace all four rods and use all the parts included in the kit.

Jim for Model Number WTW7800XW4

I'm trying to determine if I need new bearings or new suspension rods on my Whirlpool Cabrio washer. Washer has been quite loud during operation for a few weeks, but had no problem completing full wash cycles. About a week ago, a high-pitched squeal began to be heard, not constantly, but periodically during operation. As of yesterday, the common problem described by so many people on this site began to occur, namely a "uL" code and a need to restart the machine (even though the loads were not lopsided). Today the problem became dire, as the machine stopped constantly, and didn't even seem to want to remove the "uL" code after the usual lid lifting routine. Have been reading up on these machines all evening, and I still can't be sure if the problem is the bearing or the suspension rods! Any help will be most appreciated!

Jim, based on the information provided, the bearings in the tub assembly are failing and creating the high pitched noise. When the bearings fail, it can create tension on the motor assembly and cause it to behave similarly to an unbalanced load. To replace the bearings, the tub bearing kit W10435302 and installation tool W10447783 would be needed, or the entire tub assembly W10193886 can be replaced.
