First, I did a search based on the problem I had with my model of dryer. The model number was on the door frame and was visible when I opened the dryer door. We cleaned out all ducts carefully and did other basic troubleshooting but it did not help. Began to research the problem on-line and discovered that this dryer has two heating elements. One can fail while the other continues to provide heat - but with a large impact on drying time. Watched youtube videos and how to take apart the dryer to reach the heating coils. Tested the heating elements for continuity with tester and the outer loop had no continuity indicating it was broken somewhere. ... Read more

Repair went well, replaced the pulley wheel, belt, rear drum bearing. Had an issue after replacement with the dryer stopping after ~5mins or so when running with heat. Fluff cycle would run fine. Details: The lock nut on the pulley wheel didn't feel tight enough so i tried to crimp it back on the pulley arm. It then became way too lose. I had to replace it with a plastic washer I had in my toolkit. That fit snug and seems to work fine. I also added some grease to the pulley shaft under... Read more

Found the entire top bearing support plastic piece was completely worn through, the bearing slides had all disappeared some time ago. So it was obviously the problem. The felt trap duct (which is actually a drum seal along bottom front of drum so I don't know why they call it felt trap duct) had also disappeared, so a lot of lint was getting inside the front panel too. A thumping sound (like sneakers in the dryer) started happening. We stopped using it so that it wouldn't get worse and potentially break more parts. Online research suggested rear drive shaft would be the problem. But also suggested while we have the dryer apart, would be smart to replace the belt and the slides/glides (green and white plastic tabs in front, attached to the door). My GE dryer from the late 80's/early 90's was squealing when it would start up, belt or bearing I was thinking. I found a manual online that covered my model and I watched a video on this site that showed me how to take it all apart, mine was a bit different but the principles were the same. I took it apart and added some quick-disconnects to 2 wires so next time I can take the front panel off easily. After taking the timer apart to see why it would not turn I found the timer motor was jammed. Taking the motor apart I found a broken gear. Looked up the model number of the dryer and found a new timer assembly thru appliancepartspros.com I ordered, a very easy process, received the part 2 days later. Found the part through appliancepartspros.com The part was the cheapest of several web sites. although shipping for such a small part was steep ($7.95 If I was purchasing bigger parts or heavier parts..the flat rate cost would be a bargain. The part arrived the next day and fit perfectly. I actually called a repair service in our area. The serviceman asked questions and detected that I didn't need a timer unit but thought it was just a knob that was required. He offered to come out but the expense would be considerable. I am SO relieved that it was indeed the knob, and the dryer was fixed. In this time in our lives, every penny counts. First symptoms were squeaking drum. This is probably when new glide strips might have been all that we needed. But I put off fixing it... and I put it off some more. Noises got louder, squeaking became screeching, then it started to vibrate loudly. I replaced the slide bearings a few years back. A few months later the rear bearing started to go so I replaced that one. Bad idea. Replace these two at the same time. The wobbling from the rear bearing failure caused accelerated wear on the slide bearings. Without the money to fix it I ran it as it was. Another bad idea.
